Angelica KontoroffAngelica Kontoroff, the principal of Kontoroff Law P.C., handles all aspects of trust and estate litigation matters.  Her experience includes representing clients with regard to, among other things, complex will contests and trust disputes, breach of fiduciary duty claims, contested accountings, a spousal right of election proceeding, and the appeal of a decision in a turnover proceeding.  She has made appearances in the New York County, Bronx County, Kings County, Queens County, and Westchester County Surrogate’s Courts.In her probate and estate administration practice, Angelica focuses on maximizing value for beneficiaries, helping trustees and estate executors and administrators comply with their legal obligations, and defusing potentially asset-draining disputes.

Angelica founded the firm in May of 2016, after working as a partner of Lang & Kontoroff LLP, a firm that handled predominantly trust and estate litigation and probate and estate administration matters.  Before then, she worked as an associate of Law Offices of John F. Lang, the predecessor to Lang & Kontoroff LLP.

Angelica was selected to the 2016 New York Metro Rising Stars list by Super Lawyers magazine.

Education
Angelica graduated Fordham University School of Law (J.D., cum laude), where she served as the Writing and Research Editor of the Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal, attained Dean’s List honors, and worked as a Teaching Assistant in the Legal Writing Program.  She also held a judicial internships with the Honorable Jacqueline Silbermann, New York State Supreme Court, and the Honorable Kevin N. Fox, United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Before law school, Angelica graduated Macaulay Honors College of Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (B.S., Psychology and B.A. Philosophy, summa cum laude).  Her undergraduate honors include Dean’s List Honors, and admission to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and the Golden Key International Honor Society.

Interests and Activities
Angelica has lobbied for enlightened immigrant welfare policies and has volunteered as a Docent at the New York Aquarium. Her interests include hiking, mixed martial arts, and needlepoint crafting.

Martha VoelzAs Of Counsel to the firm, Martha L. Voelz is available to assist clients with trust and estate litigation and administration matters. Martha, who has a Master’s Degree in Tax Law, also advises clients regarding sensitive tax issues, such as the IRS offshore voluntary disclosure program. She has advised non-profit entities on unrelated business income and the tax status of non-profit trustees. She also has worked on real estate transactions involving like-kind exchanges and reporting issues for foreign trust disbursements to U.S. citizens.

Martha has worked on petitions for probate and administration, prepared accountings for estates and trusts, and negotiated receipt and release agreements to resolve final estate administration issues. She has worked with appraisers, accountants and real estate brokers to ensure both the probate and tax aspects of an estate are handled in a timely manner.

Although our firm does not presently do estate and tax planning, Martha maintains a separate practice in which she provides legal services related to simple and complex estate and tax planning. In her own practice, Martha creates estate plans to assist her clients transfer a variety of different assets including closely-held businesses, art collections and intellectual property. In addition to drafting wills and revocable trusts, Martha prepares irrevocable life insurance trusts (ILITs) and handles multi-generational estate planning tax issues. In the past she has worked on matters involving family limited partnerships, trusts and non-profit charitable entities. Martha also advises on U.S. estate and gift tax issues related to transfers between U.S. citizens, resident aliens and non-U.S. citizens, including the use of qualified domestic trusts (QDOTs) for non-U.S. citizen spouses. Martha is available for independent engagements in these areas.

While attending law school at night, Martha worked at the New York City Law Department in the Commercial and Real Estate Litigation Division. She handled small contract claims and public improvement lien litigation. Prior to attending law school, Martha worked as an Assistant Editor for The Chronicle of Philanthropy.
